    As a Fellow of the RACGP, Stephen is experienced in comprehensive general practice across all ages and conditions. He currently has a full roster of regular patients and is not accepting new long-term patients. He is, however, available for consultations in Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine

  • Acute Sporting Injuries

    With four years of experience as a staff doctor at Essendon Football Club, Stephen is confident in managing upper and lower limb injuries, concussions, and both acute and chronic sports conditions.

  • Back Pain

    Back pain requires careful assessment to identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment. Through his Medical Advisory work, Stephen has developed extensive expertise in the evaluation of complex spinal and neurosurgical conditions within compensable medicine, bringing a rigorous, evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of back pain.

  • Running Injuries

    Stephen holds a Master of Applied Science by Research, where his research focused on foot strike biomechanics in long-distance runners. He has published peer-reviewed research in this field and applies this expertise to the evidence-based assessment and management of running-related injuries.

  • Management of Endurance Athletes

    Stephen has a special interest in high-level endurance sports, with a clinical focus on fatigue, overtraining syndrome, and optimising nutrition for performance and recovery. In addition to his clinical experience, his research in nutritional epidemiology has developed a deep understanding of energy balance, dietary patterns, and the role of nutrition in both long-term health and athletic performance, underpinning an evidence-based approach to sports and exercise medicine.

  • Comprehensive assessment including a detailed history and physical examination, with appropriate investigations arranged where indicated. Short-term medications may be prescribed when appropriate, while recommendations for ongoing or long-term management will be communicated to your regular GP. A detailed summary letter outlining the assessment and management plan will be provided to both you and your GP following your consultation.

  • Review of your progress since the initial consultation, including the effectiveness of implemented lifestyle changes, medications, or exercise-based rehabilitation. This appointment may include review of any medical imaging or investigation results, reassessment of symptoms and functional goals, and refinement of your management plan to support ongoing recovery and long-term health. A detailed summary letter outlining the assessment and management plan will be provided to both you and your GP following this consultation.

FAQ

Does Dr Bovalino do corticosteroid injections?
Stephen will perform a select number of injections in limited situations. The administration of steroid injections is often best executed under ultrasound guidance through an accredited radiology service who Stephen has excellent relationships with.

Does Dr Bovalino offer PRP injections?
Stephen does not offer in house PRP injections, but has access to services that will administer a PRP injection when called for by the evidence base.

Will I have to pay for my imaging? What about blood tests?
In most situations yes, you will have to pay for imaging when ordered at standard Australian rates; however certain select conditions and situations may attract a fully bulk billed service. These are limited. The collection and interpretation of pathology services usually does not attract a fee, but in certain situations may do so. Please ask if you have any queries in this regard.

Does Dr Bovalino Bulk-Bill?
No. There are no bulk billing services offered for his musculoskeletal clinic.

Can I use Private Health Cover?
No. Private health cover rebates are not available for services in this particular clinic.

Can Dr Bovalino consult on WorkCover or TAC related matters?
No. Unfortunately at this time Stephen will not be consulting on any compensable medicine related issues.

Are Telehealth or phone appointments offered?
Presently Telehealth appointments are not being offered, however this may change in the future based on demand. Phone consultations will be used on occasion for simple follow up calls at the discretion of Dr Bovalino.
